Concussion Information

Coaches and Programs are expected to follow the USA Hockey Concussion Management Program and the code provisions of their respective states dealing with any suspected concussion involving a youth player.

Player Safety Coordinator (PSC)

PVAHA, with the support of the Southeastern District and USA Hockey, utilizes the Player Safety Coordinator (PSC) to implement USA Hockey safety protocols and policy at the Affiliate level.

Players that exhibit signs or symptoms of a concussion are required to be cleared by a medical professional and the documentation of this process utilizes the Return To Play (RTP) form (link below). The PSC is responsible for providing guidance, resources and assisting clubs with concussion information. Additionally the PSC is the recipient of the Return To Play forms.

To improve concussion awareness, USA Hockey has established Player Safety Coordinators at the District and Affiliate levels. Steve Willey the PVAHA Player Safety Coordinator.

Role of the Player Safety Coordinator (PSC):

  • Monitors PVAHA affiliate teams compliance with the USA Hockey concussion protocols.
  • Available as a resource for teams that have questions about the concussion protocols.
  • Acts as a resource for teams wishing to enhance their current process and procedure for concussion screening.
  • Recipient for the completed RTP forms.

Steve is the Safety Director for the Reston Raiders Hockey Club and has over 30 years experience in safety for the construction industry and fire/rescue service.
