Concussion Information

Coaches and Programs are expected to follow the USA Hockey Conmcussion Management Program and the code provisions of their respective states dealing with any suspected concussion involving a youth player.

Player Safety Coordinator (PSC)

PVAHA along with the Southeastern District and USA Hockey has announced the creation of a new position — Player Safety Coordinator (PSC)

USA Hockey updates its concussion protocol every 2 years and in spring of 2019, it implemented it’s most comprehensive Return To Play (RTP) protocol yet, requiring written documentation by a medical professional for players whom were removed from play and have been cleared to return.

Although the protocol has been out there for a while, guidance for implementing, managing and resources, along with where to send completed forms has not been spelled out. USA Hockey is striving to improve the process by establishing player safety coordinators at the affiliate and district levels. USA Hockey has named Steve Willey the PVAHA Player Safety Coordinator.

Role of the Player Safety Coordinator (PSC):

  • Monitors PVAHA affiliate teams compliance with the USA Hockey concussion protocols.
  • Available as a resource for teams that have questions about the concussion protocols.
  • Acts as a resource for teams wishing to enhance their current process and procedure for concussion screening.
  • Recipient for the completed RTP forms.

Steve is the Safety Director for the Reston Raiders Hockey Club and has over 30 years experience in safety for the construction industry and fire/rescue service.
